SIMILARITIES BETWEEN THE COMPUTER AND THE BRAIN

The human brain is an organ responsible for the coordination of body activities, through transporting stimuli, processing commands and storage of information. The computer is a device that can process, stores and retrieves large amount of data. It has a sequence of operational programs that enables it to perform a wide range of tasks. The similarities between the brain and computer cannot be overemphasized. Different people over the years have taken time to analyse and explore the differences and similarities of the brain and the computer.

Listed below are some similarities note worthy;

FUNCTION: they have similar functions. The brain has structures specialized to handle memory, emotion, calculation, communication with the body, regulation and more. The brain is wired, programmed for actions like eating, walking, sneezing, heart regulation. The computer also has the capacity to keep memory, process information, handle calculation e.t.c.

MEMORY: the brain has the capacity to gain new abilities by learning, and storing a large range of data. The brain works with the sense organs to gather sensory information which is interpreted, analysed, instruction transmitted and memory stored.

The computer also has several forms of information storage ranging from fast Static Random Access Memory (SRAM) to slow bulk storage like RAM and DVDs. It has registers which can process tasks and give results. It also gathers information from the external through peripheral input devices like keyboard, mice, joystick etc. The brain and computer both have a memory that can grow. The longer a man lives, the more memory he gathers. A computer can also increase memory by the addition of computer chips.

ENERGY: the computer and the brain both need energy to function. The brain needs oxygen and nutrients from food substances consumed by the body. The computer needs electricity to function.
Though the energy is in different forms, they both need energy to function. They also transmit signals via electric charges. In the brain, these charges are in form of chemicals that transmit electrical signals at a high speed in the nervous system. The computer also uses electricity in the mobilization of information.

DAM AGE: they can both be damaged. The brain can be affected by certain neurological disorders like Amnesia and the computer can also be affected by  a Virus. They both have backup systems in some cases while in some cases the damage is irreversible. They can also be damaged through rough handling e.g. hitting the head on a very hard surface can cause a concussion that affects the brain, rough handling can also destroy the computer.RESEARCH: both the brain and computer are subjects of interests to numerous scientists and technologists. They are being studied all over the world.

SOCIETY: they both play very vital role in the society e.g. a computer can organise traffic on a road, a man can also do the same using his brain. Other aspects of the daily life e.g. cooking, washing can be controlled by both. Also in entertainment and science. TIME: time also affect both computer and the brain. The brain cells lose their functions with age, they become slower. The computer also deteriorates with time.
